Why are we so impressed by complex ideas? We think that if something is confusing and requires specialized knowledge, it must be important. We often reward complexity and overlook simple ideas, assuming that if it’s complicated, it’s valuable, and if it’s simple, it’s not.
Look at SpaceX and the evolution of the Raptor engines they have created. Raptor One looks way more efficient than the engines used on the Apollo missions – but Elon Musk knew that they could simplify. So, over the course of three versions, Musk has created a streamlined engine for all SpaceX ships. He followed the quote by Mark Twain, “Everything should be made as simple as possible but not simpler”. We need to know that while simple does make things more efficient, there are limits to simplicity.
We should aim for simplicity in our own work. Instead of making things overly complicated, we should focus on creating tools and ideas that are straightforward and efficient. Simplifying our approach can lead to more effective solutions.
Challenge for You:
-
Explain It in Two Sentences: Try to teach someone your idea in less than two sentences. If you can explain it quickly, it’s more straightforward. If not, refine your explanation to make it simpler.
-
Use Real-World Examples: Connect your idea to a real-world example. This makes it easier to understand and more concrete.
-
Simplify the Language: Even complex ideas can be communicated in simple language. Avoid jargon and use clear terms to make your concept accessible.
By applying these tips, you’ll make complex ideas easier to grasp and more impactful.
